6:30 P.M. IN THE PES GYMNASIUM

Students that have signed up for Stage Crew will be needed the week of April 4th.
All lines and songs should be MEMORIZED by April 1st. NOW IS THE TIME to memorize.  Please let me know if you need help with your lines and songs!
Please keep track of when you need to attend rehearsal!   It is not necessary to be at a rehearsal where you are not acting.  You can check Panther Press or the Pownal Elementary School website for times.
Rehearsals have been going well!  We are on track for this musical to be a success.

Production —Any parent of a PES student is also invited to participate in the production of the musical.  The success of last year's musical was due in no small part to Pownal's parents and volunteers that graciously provided their time.  We need parent volunteers to help with rehearsal, prompting, set design, costumes, stage set-up, promotion—in short, everything that is involved with producing a musical!  Please call me at 688-4832 if you would like to volunteer.  The more, the merrier!

Sincerely,
Mr. Jason Ward
Director of Music
Pownal Elementary School

Pownal Elementary School has had a long tradition of a vibrant and strong music program.  Throughout the school year, there are many opportunities for Pownal students to take part in music.  The following are what is offered for students:

Pownal Elementary School Band
The Pownal Elementary School Band is an ensemble of 5th and 6th graders that meet once a week during the school day to work on beginning and intermediate band repertoire.  Beginning in the school year 2011-2012, the ensemble will consist of 5th graders only.  Currently, only 5th and 6th graders can begin band instruments.  The band is Pownal's primary instrumental group.  Anybody with an interest in band is invited and encouraged to join.
In September of the school year, students beginning on band instruments (brass, woodwind, percussion) attend the Instrument Rental Night hosted by the school and by Music and Arts located in Falmouth.  Students choose a band instrument (either from Music and Arts or from a limited selection we have here in Pownal) and later on in the same week are assigned a time for group lessons.  Group lessons are during the school day and are 30 minutes in length.  Lessons are taught by Mr. Ward and are free of charge.
Students in band learn a variety of instrumental skills.  Reading and understanding the rudiments of written music are a must, and all students involved in band extend their knowledge and understanding of written music.  In addition to reading music, students learn about dynamics, tempo, syncopation, different styles and genres of music, and valuable ensemble playing skills, which serve the student well if they decide to continue musical endeavors in middle or high school.  Most importantly, students gain invaluable experience, self-confidence, camaraderie, and the thrill of playing in band!
Students in band are encouraged to be part of the band throughout the school year.   Pownal has had an exceptional rate of retention in band and very little turnover and dropout throughout the school year.
Students participating in band are graded as part of a class.  Grading is based on practice, behavior, preparation, and attendance of required performances.  During the school year, The Pownal Elementary Band has two required concerts: The annual Holiday Concert in December as well as the Spring Concert which is usually held in May/June.  Additional performances arise during the year, which students are encouraged, but not required, to attend.

Pownal Elementary School Choruses
Pownal has also had a long tradition of vocal music.  Pownal is unique in that grades 1 through 6 take chorus as a required class.  Chorus is graded as a class, and grading is based on behavior, vocal technique, and preparation in class.  Choruses in Pownal are traditionally set as follows:  Grade 1 and 2 Chorus, Grades 3 and 4 Chorus, and Grades 5 and 6 Chorus.  All groups perform as well at the annual concerts held in Pownal—the Holiday Concert and the Spring Concert.  Additional performances may also arise.

•    1st and 2nd Grade Chorus—in this ensemble, young musicians learn the basics of vocal technique and learn appropriate songs for their range.  Songs for this ensemble are taught by rote, with minimal notation introduced in class.  Partner songs, rounds, and two-part harmony are also introduced, as well as proper behavior for young performers.

•    3rd and 4th Grade Chorus—Students in this ensemble become integrated to reading music and learning about the contour of vocal singing.  Songs for this ensemble are taught with a combination of rote and rudimentary knowledge of music notation.  Two-part harmony, rounds, unison works, and knowledge of dynamics and phrasing are introduced.  Students learn of more advanced choral works, which include standard songs of young choral repertoire but also appropriate popular works at the discretion of the director.

•    5th and 6th Grade Chorus—This group learns advanced vocal repertoire for elementary school students and also learns about proper vocal technique, more advanced reading of music, and singing in two-part harmony.  Repertoire is a diverse mix of standards of the vocal repertoire as well as appropriate popular material.

Spring Musical
Pownal also has a tradition of hosting an annual spring musical.  The musical is a production consisting entirely from students from Pownal Elementary and is bolstered by the more than generous volunteers of the Pownal community such as parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators and students.  In 2010, we had a hugely successful production of The Music Man Jr.  This coming spring, our choice of musical is Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Jr. , based on the successful children's book and subsequent movies in 1970 (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) and 2008 (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).
Traditionally Pownal's musicals features 3rd through 5th graders.  In the school year 2010-2011, we are extending the invitation to 6th graders as well.  Participation in the musical is not required, but strongly encouraged.  Participation involves an after-school commitment of 8-10 weeks of no more than 75 minutes of rehearsal (2 hours during the last week) and students involved are expected to stay with the commitments involving rehearsals.  Proper classroom behavior is an expectation for those involved in these rehearsals.
Students involved in the school musical learn about how to put on a major production, from rehearsing music, lines, and choreography, to set design, lighting, sound, costumes, and basic stage management.  Parents and volunteers are also encouraged to be involved in the process of the musical as well.  Please be in contact with me here at school if you are interested; the more the merrier when it comes to helping out for the musical!  I will also be in touch with parents and schedule production meeting for this year of what is needed and for the logistics of this particular musical.
