About Us
Welcome to Pownal Elementary School! PES is a PK-5 school. Our middle school students attend either Durham Community School or Freeport Middle School, and our high school students attend Freeport High School. Our school day starts at 8:30 and ends at 3:00.
Our school has one grade per class, with small class sizes and a total school population of around 100 students. Kindergarten meets in the morning, and preschool meets in the afternoon. In addition to the core subject areas, students also receive instruction in Spanish, technology, art, music, physical education, library, and health.
This year our students are working on a positive behavior incentive plan called Paws for Applause. Students can earn cards when an adult notices that they're doing something positive. Those cards are turned in to the office, and each week the class with the highest percentage of cards per students participates in a bonus activity with the principal. After the entire school has earned 1,000 paws, we will have a theme day! The goal is to earn four theme days during the 2011-2012 school year.
We are also working on a new behavior system which focuses on Pownal students being safe, respectful, responsible learners.
