Guidance

The Guidance program at Pownal School is offered to our students in individual, small group, or classroom settings.

Individual counseling involves meeting with the student to help deal with and work through a problem that is bothering the student and is adversely affecting the student's learning.  Individual counseling is typically short-term in nature.  The school counselor does not provide therapy but when necessary, referrals are made to outside agencies.

Small group counseling is used to provide an atmosphere of acceptance, encouragement, and support in a small group of the student's peers.  Because peers strongly influence one another, small group counseling provides an opportunity to practice positive behaviors.
Classroom Guidance is done in a whole-class setting.  Students discuss issues such as personal safety, bully prevention, dealing with anger, responsibility, conflict resolution, and decision making.
