About Us

Welcome to Pownal Elementary School!

PES is a PK-5 school. Our middle school students attend Freeport Middle School, and our high school students attend Freeport High School.

Our school day starts at 8:45am and ends at 3:25pm.

All students are well known by staff with one class per grade, small class sizes and a total school population of around 110 students. Kindergarten through fifth grades attend full time. Our prekindergarten is a half day program.  Students attend from 8:45 to 11:40 Monday through Friday. A limit of 16 students can attend our prekindergarten program. In addition to the core subject areas, students also receive instruction in STEM, art, music, guidance, physical education, and library.

We take pride in the joyous, positive climate at PES. Students work together to be safe, respectful, responsible learners. Teachers are well trained in the evidence based Responsive Classroom management techniques.  This training ensures that learning is designed through the Responsive Classroom core beliefs that children learn best when programming is built around a positive community, developmentally responsive teaching, effective management, and engaging academics.

We are supported by Impact, our very active parent volunteer organization. In addition to volunteering and fundraising, Impact supports many enrichment activities. This includes a whole school field trips to a cultural event, author visits, student scholarships to after school activities, and helping to fund the Freedom Trail trip for our 4th graders each spring.

PES is a happy place to learn and work!
