The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. in the Freeport High School Library. The Board will once again be deliberating on the FY25 budget and are seeking input from the community. The agenda has an item specifically for public input. You can also email Board members at board@rsu5.org. At this meeting, the Board will also vote to adopt the FY25 budget.

State of Maine Empowers Freeport Middle School with #TeachWithTech Grant for Innovative Drone Learning

In a move to foster innovative learning, the Maine Department of Education has awarded Mrs. Alvarez, a STEM educator at Freeport Middle School, with the #TeachWithTech Grant. This grant aims to elevate the learning experience program by funding opportunities to MLTI educators who want to bring technology into their MLTI schools in a way that is innovative, impactful, and intriguing.

FMS students embarked on a unique educational journey, learning to code the indoor drones in an immersive simulated environment set on the red planet, Mars. The simulated coding exercises not only engaged students in problem-solving but also offered a taste of interplanetary exploration right from their STEM classroom.

The highlight of this innovative program was the transition from the virtual to the real, as students took their coded missions from the Martian landscape to their classroom. Witnessing the drones lift off and navigate the physical space brought a hands-on dimension to their coding skills, fostering a deeper understanding of technology's practical applications.

One 6th Grader expressed her excitement about the grant, stating, "Learning to code the drones in the simulated environment was cool and challenging by itself, but seeing them actually lift off the ground was amazing.  I loved all of it and I learned so much.”
 

Freeport Middle School is committed to preparing students for the demands of a rapidly advancing technological landscape. The #TeachWithTech Grant is a launchpad for the future leaders in technology and innovation.

FY25 Budget Update: This past month the Board has listened to presentations by each Administrator and Superintendent Skorapa on the proposed FY25 budget. It is now time for the Board to begin their budget deliberations at their Wednesday, March 13, 2024 Board of Directors meeting. The meeting will be held at the Freeport High School Library at 6:30 p.m.

The FY25 budget process will begin at the February 7, 2024 Board of Directors meeting. The Superintendent’s Proposed Budget will be presented to the Board. 
All citizens are encouraged to get involved in the budget process by attending Board meetings, watching via the live stream, or sending comments to Board members at Board@rsu5.org
